Why employ staff from overseas?
Regrettably, it is a fact that today the UK labour market suffers huge
skills shortages in many sectors. We are all too aware of the huge skills
shortages within the Health & Education sectors, but this also applies to
many other industry sectors. It has been reported that within the UK we
have a shortage of 50,000 lorry drivers, 39,000 chefs to name a few. The
2004 enlargement of the EU, admitted eight new states. The UK Government
optimised upon this and removed restrictions permitting citizens of these
countries from working in the UK. Within these countries are many
different skilled workers who have a tremendous degree of loyalty and
commitment as well as excellent skills within their respective trade/profession.
They are keen to improve their income level and standard of living by coming
to live and work in the UK for a year or two. One thing that really does
stand out is that these individuals show a loyalty and commitment that
regrettably is hard to find today in our employment market.
What countries do you recruit from? The new EU Accession States which comprise; Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania,
Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia, & Hungary.
How do you recruit?Abel Staff is a UK registered company which is UK based and managed, all
client contact and development is undertaken form within the UK by
experienced recruitment professionals. The key staff of Abel Staff
collectively have over 30 years experience within UK recruitment sectors.
Overseas we have an office and call centre in Estonia which currently
undertakes all recruitment within the EU Accession States, this office is
run by experienced staff employed by us. Within the individual countries we
employ experienced recruitment consultants who are responsible for all the
day to day recruitment of candidates for Abel Staff clients. We strictly
adhere to the principles of quality ethical recruitment throughout the
company; all staff receive ongoing training and development in line with the
quality standards of UK Investor in People. We operate our own bespoke
internet based recruitment software, which holds extensive candidate
databases.
Do you only provide permanent candidatesNo, we can supply both permanent & temporary candidates throughout the UK.
Are UK companies allowed to employ staff from the EU Accession States?Yes, the UK Government permitted the employment of nationals of the EU
Accession States from the 4th May 2004. We strictly verify the nationality
of all our candidates by inspecting their passports, ID cards and birth
certificates, to ensure that they are permitted to work in the UK under the
Asylum and Immigration Act. We hold copies of candidates ID and supply this to clients as requested.
Do you check if candidates have any criminal record?Yes, all candidates regardless of their industry sector must undergo a
police record check within their home country. We hold certificates for
each candidate in both their local language and also translated into English
language. This information is supplied to clients.
Do you check candidate's references?Yes, we request a minimum of two written references/recommendations from all
candidates ideally from previous employers and/or character references from
a professionally recognised person that is not a member of their family.
This information is translated into English language and supplied to clients.
Are candidates medically fit?Yes, all candidates have to provide an up to date medical
certificate/letter
from their own GP, stating that they are medically fit and free from any infectious disease
and medically able to come and live and work in the UK.
Where will the candidate live? The majority of our clients arrange accommodation
for their new staff prior to their arrival in the UK. We can assist with
this process if necessary. Most clients provide accommodation close to the
candidate's place of work, in bed sits, shared houses, guest houses etc. In some
cases candidates are offered lodgings with another employee of the company.
Clients requiring staff urgently may seek suitable
local bed and breakfast accommodation, whilst sourcing longer term rented
accommodation. Candidates do expect to pay for their accommodation and
living costs whilst in the UK. Many clients, who arrange candidate
accommodation, agree with the candidate in advance a deduction from their salary
to cover the cost of the accommodation which the client is paying for.
Do I have to pay for the candidates travel to the UK?Generally it is up to each client, currently the cost of airline travel is
very affordable, with the many low cost airlines that now have daily flights
to and from each country and the UK. One way tickets can generally be
purchased for under £50 and in some cases a lot less. The majority of
candidates are prepared to purchase their own tickets, which is a sign of
just how determined and serious they are, especially when you consider, that
the value of their money is no where comparative to the value of ours. We
have also obtained preferential rates for group bookings where volume no's
of staff are required for clients. Candidates are informed that travel back
for holidays during their UK employment is at their own individual expense.
What is the level of English language skills for candidates?
We recruit candidates according to our client's individual requirements, and
grade each candidates English language skills accordingly, for their ability
to hold a conversation and follow instructions. We can utilise English
language skills test when required. The majority of candidates under 35 speak and understand
a good level of English language which they have learnt as part of their general
education. Some of our clients, who recruit teams of staff, ensure
that within each team there is a fluent English speaking person, this
applies particularly well to work situations in the UK where there is no
contact with the public etc.
Can you compare oversees qualifications?Yes we can, using NARIC, an organisation that provides qualification
comparability's from all the countries that we recruit from.
How long does it take to employ an overseas candidate? This very much depends on the type of job offered, the skills requirement
and the availability of candidates. For general work we can have candidates
over within two weeks and in some cases within days, subject to a client's
agreement. For skilled positions, it can take up to 4-6 weeks, depending on
the availability of candidates, processing of all candidate information and
time that the candidate may have to work notice from their current
employment (assuming that they have a max of 1 months notice to serve).
Upon receiving client's instructions we will give a likely timescale to both
recruit the candidate and have the candidate working with you in the UK. We
hold a large database of candidates who are ready to travel to the UK, so
anything is possible!
Can I interview candidates?Quite simply yes, we have overseas facilities for clients who wish to
interview candidates, alternatively we can organise tele interviews. When
we are instructed to recruit and source candidates, we will provide a
definitive shortlist and/or the required candidates according to the
information we have from the client regarding the vacancy.
What about the staff welfare, living & working in a different country?A subject that we take very seriously at Abel Staff. Unlike the majority of
foreign recruitment companies, we DO not simply just send the staff over and
forget about them. Being UK based we provide assistance in every area that
we can, this includes: - Pre UK arrival familiarisation - what to bring,
information regarding where you will be living & working in the UK, cost of
living. We basically provide as much information to each candidate that we
can, as we would expect if we were in their shoes. When the candidate has
arrived in the UK we can arrange their transfer from Airport to UK place of
work and assist with opening a UK bank account, applying for a UK national
insurance number, completing the WRF (workers register form). In addition
we provide a 24 welfare support line for all candidates working through us
in the UK. We believe that a satisfied candidate will work very well.
What is the Workers Registration Scheme?Introduced by the UK Government
in May 2004, it applies to all citizens from the eight Central & Eastern European
EU Accession Countries, citizens of these eight countries need to register
themselves with the Workers Registration Team at the Home Office after 1 May
2004. Individuals need to register under this scheme within one month of
starting a new job in the UK by sending the completed application form along
with a letter confirming the employment from the employer, two passport
photo's, ones passport or national ID card and payment of £50 to the Home
Office. Upon registration the worker receives, a registration card and
certificate, a copy of the certificate is also sent to the employer. Upon
working in the UK for 12 months, then a registration card and certificate is no
longer required, and employees will be able to apply for a residence
permit exercising their EU treaty rights. The following link takes you to
